Peng Meng Boss Guide: Dodge Black Flashes and Break His Guard

Recognize Peng Meng’s two black-flash openings, protect your Sha-Chi and switch to bleed damage when his guard breaks.

Against Peng Meng, the Axemaster, prioritize two habits: dodge black-flash attacks and save your bleed weapon’s sustained attacks for guard-break windows. Defending against black flashes costs substantial Sha-Chi, so adjust that response first if your defense keeps collapsing.

Location and equipment

The boss stands on the main route beyond Mandate Outpost. An early setup uses the early paired blades Sanguine Twin for regular exchanges and the bleed blade Jagged Steel for damage when the boss is vulnerable.

Observe an attack sequence before trying to fit in a long combo. Learn which movements require a dodge and where there is room for a short response, then add attacks as the rhythm becomes familiar.

Recognize the two black-flash openings

  • A direct rush toward you: when the black flash accompanies his approach, prepare to dodge.
  • A ground slam with his back turned: do not treat his turned back as an invitation to rush in. Deal with the attack before attempting to punish it.

He also mixes red- and blue-flash attacks, including more than one blue-flash move. Read the movement as well as the color instead of assuming every warning leads to the same timing.

Repeat a controlled combat loop

  1. Handle the pressure. Use the paired blades for ordinary exchanges and dodge when the black-flash attack starts. Watch your own Sha-Chi and switch weapons to keep the exchange manageable.
  2. Work toward a guard break. Take brief attack opportunities between his sequences. The aim is to deplete his yellow gauge, without turning every small gap into a long combo.
  3. Switch to the bleed blade. Once his guard breaks, use Jagged Steel to build bleed during the opening.
  4. Return to defense. When he resumes attacking, stop extending the combo and prepare for the next sequence.

Check what is causing the failed attempt

If your Sha-Chi disappears too quickly, review whether you defended against a black-flash move. If you reach damage openings but get little out of them, check whether you switched to the bleed weapon during the guard break.

Bleed buildup is not directly displayed as a visible bar. Judge it by the actual trigger instead of chasing a fixed attack count after the boss has already recovered.

For equipment that expands this approach later, see the early bleed and shield-breaking build.
