Jagged Steel Boss Guide: Guard Breaks and Power Surge

Find Jagged Steel, the Frenzied Brute beyond the Red Thread Barrier, use the opening fight to your advantage, and work toward guard-break windows.

Jagged Steel, the Frenzied Brute is a useful place to learn the rhythm of breaking an enemy’s guard before committing to damage. Watch the yellow gauges beneath the health bars, create an opening, then return to defense when that opening ends.

Find the fight and prepare

In Weeping Creek Valley, pass through the barrier of red threads. You will reach a group of enemies already fighting, with the boss among them.

You can use Sanguine and the early paired blades Sanguine Twin for this approach. Before entering, familiarize yourself with switching between them, blocking and using Power Surge. The beginner combat guide covers defensive inputs and upgrade basics.

Use a four-step combat loop

  1. Watch the existing fight. Other enemies are already engaging the boss. You can let them wear him down before joining instead of immediately rushing into the group.
  2. Track both yellow gauges. They sit beneath the health bars. Emptying the enemy’s gauge opens a guard-break window; losing your own Sha-Chi also leaves you vulnerable.
  3. Work toward the break. Combine defense, attacks during openings and weapon switching. Watch the gauge rather than judging every exchange only by the health lost.
  4. Attack during the opening. Commit more damage when the boss is guard-broken. Once the window ends, check both sides’ resources before starting the next exchange.

Use Power Surge to work toward a guard break

Blocking and intermittent attacks build Sha-Chi Essence, a separate resource used to perform Power Surge. These attacks cannot be blocked by enemies and reduce the enemy’s yellow gauge. Use them alongside normal attacks to work toward a guard break.

Keep the two resources distinct. Your Sha-Chi gauge determines how much defensive room you have, while Sha-Chi Essence determines whether you can perform a Power Surge. Check the relevant display before planning the next attack.

What to check after a failed attempt

  • You attack repeatedly before a break: watch the enemy gauge and save longer sequences for the opening.
  • Your defense collapses unexpectedly: check your own Sha-Chi instead of watching only the boss.
  • You try to block every attack the same way: follow the attack’s warning and the defensive rules explained in the tutorial.

For your first attempts, concentrate on seeing the guard break happen. Once that is familiar, add Power Surge to the sequence. Separating those learning steps makes it easier to identify where an exchange went wrong.
